Most people who break into data don't
fail because they're not smart enough.
2
:They fail because they spent six
months on the wrong thing, which
3
:is often getting a certificate.
4
:And when it didn't get them the
job, they decided that they were
5
:the problem, and they gave up.
6
:But they weren't the problem.
7
:The certificate was.
8
:So today, I'm gonna show you
why certificates are a trap
9
:and exactly what to do instead.
10
:And just real quick on why
you should listen to me on
11
:this, I run findadatabjob.com,
12
:which is a job board that has posted
over 15,000 different data jobs, and
13
:I'm literally looking at hundreds of
real data job postings every single
14
:day, and I've literally studied
that for over a year and a half now.
15
:I've also helped over 500
people actually land data jobs,
16
:career pivoters just like you.
17
:So this isn't really a hot take.
18
:It's what the hiring data is
actually saying and what I'm
19
:actually seeing in industry.
20
:And let me just go ahead and try
to get ahead of the comments here.
21
:I'm not saying that certificates
are completely worthless.
22
:They're not completely worthless.
23
:They're just not marketed to you the
way that they actually should be.
24
:They are really misrepresentative
of what they actually should be.
25
:You can probably make a certificate
worth it, and I'll explain how to do
26
:that towards the end of this episode.
27
:But even more importantly, I'm going
to show you the thing that you should
28
:be doing instead of the certificates,
the thing that actually got me and my
29
:students hired, the thing that got us
out of tutorial hell and into the data
30
:world, so stick around for that because
that's the only thing that really matters.
31
:All right, let's start with number
one reason why certificates aren't
32
:really worth it, and that is they
do not matter in industry, and
33
:now that they're too common, it
really doesn't matter in industry.
34
:And let me prove the first part.
35
:So I've actually looked at, like, 11,000
of the most recent data analyst job
36
:descriptions on my job board website,
and I searched every single one of
37
:them for any cert or certificate.
38
:The Google certs, the PL-300 from Power
BI, the IBM one, the Meta one, the
39
:DataCamp, any of them, and you know
how many of them actually mentioned a
40
:requirement of a data analyst certificate?
41
:Zero.
42
:Not even one.
43
:And it's not just my research.
44
:Dataquest interviewed real hiring
managers and decision-makers and
45
:published 200 pages of transcripts
of how data hiring actually works.
46
:The number of times that the
word certificate comes up in
47
:those 200 pages, absolutely zero.
48
:So let's just go ahead
and s- kill this myth.
49
:Let's bust it right now.
50
:Hiring managers are not sitting there,
like, looking at your resume, and they're
51
:like, "Is this person certified or not?
52
:Oh, they are?
53
:Hired.
54
:Oh, they're not?
55
:Toss it into the black hole of oblivion."
56
:If certificates actually mattered,
it would be inside of the job
57
:description, and it's clearly not.
58
:But here's the part that
actually gets worse recently.
59
:Even if a cert did give you a tiny edge
in the past, it doesn't anymore because
60
:literally everyone and their dog has them.
61
:Like, literally two and a half
million people have started the Google
62
:Data Analytics certificate alone.
63
:Two and a half million.
64
:So when you're putting it on
the resume, you're not really
65
:separating yourself from the pile.
66
:You're becoming part of the pile.
67
:A certificate basically says, "Hey,
I watched some videos, and I clicked
68
:some multiple choice answers, and
I'm ready to be a data analyst,"
69
:and no one's really buying that.
70
:That's not really standing out, and
you're actually really standing in.
71
:And in this competitive
market, you have to stand out.
72
:Which actually brings me to reason
number two that certs suck, and
73
:this one's more important than
people realize because certificates,
74
:especially the way they're doing it
online these days, train you to follow
75
:instructions, not to solve problems.
76
:And those are two entirely
different skill sets.
77
:They are not the same.
78
:If you think about what a cert actually
is, the data is pretty clean The
79
:question's handed to you, and oftentimes
you don't even have to leave your browser.
80
:You don't have to download anything.
81
:You're doing data analytics in the
browser with the question given to
82
:you and the data cleaned given to you.
83
:That is not real life, you guys.
84
:It's not real life.
85
:Like, they give you all these multiple
choice, you know, this nice little
86
:sandbox where, like, nothing can go wrong.
87
:It's just not reality.
88
:Think about what an actual data job is.
89
:The data is an absolute disaster.
90
:It's all over the place.
91
:It's messy.
92
:It's dirty.
93
:Half of it doesn't even make any sense.
94
:You know, no one's really handing
you, "Hey, solve this question."
95
:You have to figure out what
questions to ask, and there is never
96
:an answer key in real life like
there is in these certifications.
97
:And if there were, they wouldn't need
to hire you to solve the problem.
98
:So the cert is drilling you on one
habit that the actual job doesn't
99
:even require and actually discourages.
100
:Like, you can't just sit and wait and be
told what to do on the job, and that's
101
:why so many people finish a cert, and they
feel like, "Oh, my gosh, I'm so ready.
102
:I'm gonna land my first data job.
103
:I'm gonna start applying for jobs.
104
:I'm gonna walk in."
105
:And they get handed this spreadsheet,
and they're like, "Hey, can you look
106
:at this and give me the answers?"
107
:And then they're like, "Oh, crap.
108
:That's not what this
certificate taught me."
109
:Nobody ever made them sit down and go
through the whole mess, the whole process,
110
:and that's actually how shallow it is.
111
:I went through, and I count how
many times you actually run a SQL
112
:query, one of the most important
things to do as a data analyst.
113
:How many times you run a SQL query in the
entire Google Data Analytics certificate,
114
:and you have six months that you're in
this program according to them, right?
115
:You run 25 queries.
116
:You run 25 queries, you
guys, in six months.
117
:That's like one a week, and you
can't learn SQL by doing one
118
:query every week for six months.
119
:That's just like, that's not fast enough.
120
:That's not realistic.
121
:You cannot learn to solve real
problems doing one query in
122
:a week in a browser sandbox.
123
:It's just flatly not enough reps.
124
:Now, moving on to reason three, and this
is the one that actually hurts people.
125
:The cert hands you a fake finish
line, as much as I hate to see
126
:it, and here's what I mean.
127
:You spend these six months.
128
:You're grinding.
129
:You finish finally.
130
:You get the certificate with
this nice little PDF with your
131
:name on it, and it feels like,
"Whoo, I crossed the finish line."
132
:And you're like, "All right.
133
:I'm qualified now.
134
:I'm ready.
135
:Time to go to a job."
136
:And so you start applying, and
you don't really hear back.
137
:And then you apply more, and
you don't really hear back.
138
:And then you start to get rejected,
and then you get rejected again.
139
:And then you apply again and get rejected
again, and that just happens continuously
140
:until you just cry and give up.
141
:And here's the dangerous part.
142
:Because the certificate made you feel
qualified, when these rejections pile
143
:up, you don't blame the certificate.
144
:You blame yourself.
145
:You start thinking, "Oh, maybe
I'm just not smart enough in this.
146
:Maybe data's not for me.
147
:Maybe I'm not a tech person."
148
:And when those thoughts come,
that's when people quit.
149
:It's not because they're not smart enough
because I definitely think they are.
150
:I think you are smart enough
to become a data analyst.
151
:But you quit because the certificate
said, "Hey, if you cross this finish
152
:line, you're gonna land a job."
153
:That's the promise that they're giving
you, and then this crash that comes
154
:down makes you feel like it was you.
155
:Let's be clear about this.
156
:It was never you.
157
:The cert qualified you for the test
at the end of the certification,
158
:those little multiple choice quizzes.
159
:It did not qualify you for the
job, and those are two separate
160
:things, and no one told you that
those are two separate things.
161
:Like, it's not your fault.
162
:The real cost of this
certificate isn't the money.
163
:It'sβ¦
164
:They're all pretty cheap, to be honest.
165
:The real cost is the opportunity
cost of- Of the time you
166
:spent doing the wrong things.
167
:And it's such a shame because it can
make a perfectly good data analyst
168
:candidate literally give up and just
stay in the career that they hate.
169
:Which actually leads me into reason number
four, and it's the opportunity cost.
170
:Because those six months, you might think
that they're cheap, but they're not.
171
:Every month you spend on a cert is
a month that you're not spending on
172
:stuff that actually gets you hired.
173
:And it's worse than just lost time because
the certificate teaches you literally
174
:the wrong skills on the way out the door.
175
:The Google cert spends so much time
on R, which is a tool that I like.
176
:I love R.
177
:I think it's really fun.
178
:But R only shows up in 4% of
all data analyst job postings.
179
:4%, you guys.
180
:Like, literally, you're spending time
learning R, and it doesn't really
181
:even show up on job descriptions.
182
:Do you think how crazy that is?
183
:Like, you're wasting
your time learning that.
184
:And when it teaches you spreadsheets,
it uses Google Sheets, which is fine.
185
:Google Sheets is a fine tool, but you're
going to be using Excel on the job.
186
:Excel is literally listed a
hundred times more on real job
187
:descriptions than Google Sheets.
188
:So, like, why not just learn Excel?
189
:Like, why learn Google Sheets?
190
:And I know they're similar, but,
like, let's learn what matters.
191
:But Google doesn't want you
to do that because they want
192
:you to use their product.
193
:So you're gonna come out of this having
spent months on the tools that the market
194
:isn't really even asking for, while
high-demand tools, fast-to-learn stacks
195
:like Excel, SQL, Tableau, they really
get shortchanged in the whole process.
196
:And the deeper problem is that
any fixed curriculum is frozen
197
:in time, and the market is moving
literally every single year.
198
:Honestly, it's probably
moving every six months.
199
:And a cert that was built, like,
years ago can't really keep up.
200
:So just a question here: Are you
spending your most valuable resource,
201
:your time, learning skills that
don't really matter in the long term?
202
:If so, it's time to make a change So,
okay, is a certificate ever worth it?
203
:And the answer is yes.
204
:Like, you were once a total beginner,
if you're not a total beginner
205
:right now, and you need something
structured just to, like, figure
206
:out what the heck's even going on.
207
:Likeβ¦
208
:And that's okay, and that's
what the certificate is.
209
:But I think there are better
ways to actually get that
210
:orientation of what's going on.
211
:But it's better than nothing.
212
:Like, starting something
is better than nothing.
213
:Starting something structured is better
than starting something unstructured.
214
:But if certs aren't the perfect path, then
what is, and what should you do instead?
215
:And my answer is the SPN method.
216
:Like, this is it.
217
:This is the thing that actually
works and fixes everything
218
:that we just talked about.
219
:So SPN stands for skills,
projects, and networking.
220
:And the reason that certs fails is they
give you one really bad version of these.
221
:Like, it's literally zero of projects and
networking and just kind of okay skills.
222
:Skills, they matter.
223
:Like, they're actually important.
224
:You need to have real applied skills
to all the tools that the market is
225
:using, but you don't just need skills.
226
:If you ignore projects and networking,
you do it at your own peril.
227
:Projects are proof that you can actually
take a business problem, get the
228
:messy and confusing data, and create
a business solution using that data.
229
:And no, the random capstone that's
optional at the end of the Google
230
:cert, the random bike share in
New York City one doesn't count.
231
:Like, that's just been done a million
times, and it's just so trivial.
232
:Like, you need to have a project that not
that many people have done, that you have
233
:a unique approach on, and even better
if it's in a niche that you care about.
234
:Your goal is to make the hiring manager
stop scrolling or paging through resumes
235
:and actually pay attention to you.
236
:And networking is important
because most jobs don't actually
237
:come from the apply button.
238
:I hate to say it as someone
who owns a job board.
239
:They come from people, a network,
a referral, a cohort going through
240
:it with you so you're not alone.
241
:Like, that is huge.
242
:You need to be networking.
243
:And if you're not doing all three in
equal weight, you're going to have issues.
244
:If you skip even one of the S, the P,
or the N, you're probably going to fail.
245
:And a certificate gives you like,
let's say, a third of the skills,
246
:and you're missing out on the rest of
the skills, the rest of the projects,
247
:and the rest of the networking.
248
:So my recommendation
is to learn the skills.
249
:The skills that matter are Excel, SQL,
and some business intelligence tool.
250
:I like Tableau, but if you want to choose
Power BI, I'm not going to complain.
251
:Build projects with those, post
them on a portfolio, and then start
252
:networking with hiring managers,
recruiters, your neighbors, your friends,
253
:your cousins, literally everyone.
254
:The SPN method, and that is the
path to actually landing your job.
255
:Now, everything I just talked
about is absolutely free.
256
:Like, you can go learn skills for free.
257
:You can build projects for free.
258
:You can put them on portfolio for free.
259
:You can network for free.
260
:And plenty of people do that.
261
:Like, you can do it on your own.
262
:But if you'd rather not do it alone and
you'd rather not be guessing if you're
263
:on the right path or not, and you want
to do it with friends and teammates
264
:and with my coaching and my network
behind you, that's the whole reason I
265
:built the Data Analytics Accelerator.
266
:Over five hundred people have gone through
the program and absolutely loved it.
267
:They've learned the skills
that they needed to learn.
268
:They've built the projects and put them
on a portfolio, and they've done the
269
:networking necessary to land a job.
270
:If they had questions, they came to
office hours and got them answered,
271
:or they asked in our community and our
mentors answered them within 24 hours.
272
:And that's a realistic option for
you if you are curious about it.
273
:But whatever you choose, to do it
on your own or to do it with us,
274
:that's 100% up to you, and obviously
you need to do what is best for you.
275
:I wanna make sure you have all
the information you need about our
276
:accelerator, our bootcamp, so there's
a link in the description down below.
277
:Please click it and check it out
